Microscopes

Aim:
I want to find out what an onion cell looks like under a microscope.

Research: 

Method:

Equipment

  • onion
  • tweezers
  • dropper
  • iodine
  • water
  • coverslip

Instructions

  1. Get your equipment ready
  2. make sure to be safe
  3. pull off a thin layer of onion skin cells, using tweezers.
  4. place the onion cells on the middle of the glass slide
  5. using the dropper, put one drop of iodine on to the onion cells
  6. gently, lower a coverslip onto the cells (use the tweezers to go slower.)
  7. put the slide on the stage of the microscope
  8. use the smallest lens and focus the image.
  9. use the next biggest lens and focus
  10. draw what you see down the microscope, or take a photo with your phone.

Discussion:

Do you have any interesting questions about cells?

What happens if the plant is missing a cell somehow?

What happens to cells when you pour any other liquid on them, like acid or water?

This probably isn’t the right answer but I think that the cells will dissolve into the liquid, and the plant will die.

What would be my next steps?

Trying to multitask everything in this experiment
